When you picture a warrior, it seems like peace would be the exact opposite of what he’s about. But the nature of virtuous masculinity is that we have the ability to affect war in order to restore peace, not to foment mayhem across the landscape.

My first-time guest Sig Tiegs is the host of the Do Hard Things Podcast, and he spends a lot of time thinking about what it means to be a peaceful warrior. So to kick off the show, we talk about how the whole issue at play starts to begin with. Why can we as grown-ass men and dads become so disconnected from our kids as they grow up?

Next, we ask a related question: Why can outwardly successful men become emotionally checked-out, and how do they find their way back to their women, children and even themselves? Let’s just say Sig is the father of triplets (!) so he knows exactly what the challenges are!

And along the same lines, how can powerful, badass men be reduced to utter confusion by their WAGs and stopped dead in their tracks, speechless? Why does the persona that works to keep peace in the corporate world–or even in the military–backfire on us when we’re off the clock at home with our loved ones?

What are some ways we as men tend to sabotage our own peace, continuing to live in chaos as if by choice? What is the connection between being a measured man and finding peace? Why is de-escalation such an important still, and why is it so hard for us as men to do?

Sig is the first to admit that this has been a journey for him. How did he turn things around in his own life, and especially when it comes to attracting his wife and becoming the peacekeeper in his family?
