My guest is 2-time USA Olympian Nic Long, who happens to have made his name in the sport that’s nearest and dearest to our hearts here at Casa McKay. That’s BMX racing, of course…and Nic happens to be my first-ever BMX related guest.

So why now, at episode 362? Well, IMAO there is no better example than BMX of an environment where the older, respected experts tend to give so much back to the younger kids. And after a survey I took online, I was thrilled when Nic was voted one of the most influential pros out there in this area. As such, there’s absolutely no better man to help cover this all-important topic that has been on my radar screen for a couple of years now.

So…when you become a father and have kids, you instinctively give back to them. But we as men tend to have a yearning inside to also give back beyond the four walls of our own homes, especially to the younger generation. After all, every one of us who successfully grew up to be adult men who contribute to society were likely mentored in some way. The more we remember what it was like to be a kid, the stronger we sense the call of duty and our potential influence on the lives of kids.

What exactly do we have to get handled in order to earn the right to be an effective role model to kids? Could it be that this concept is the very earmark of moving from boyhood into mature adulthood?

And what’s more, could it all be an even more valuable experience to everyone involved if we stop worrying about how inherently impressive we are, get over ourselves and simply jump in and help out? And what if we actually end up getting more out of giving back than even those we give back to?
